The Samsung Gear S3 is ahead of the Apple Watch in mobile payments
Some smartwatches, most notably the Apple Watch and the Samsung Gear S2, include NFC for quick and easy payments. At compatible payment terminals, paying can be as simple as activating the payments feature on the watch and placing it next to the terminal.
Samsung’s mobile payment service, Samsung Pay, has a distinct advantage over Apple Pay. Samsung’s service can use MST, a technology that allows Samsung devices to pay even at places that don’t yet have the newer NFC technology. This means that Samsung Pay works at way more places than Apple Pay.
Now, with the unveiling of the Samsung Gear S3, we have learned that Samsung’s latest watch, like Samsung’s latest phones, will also support MST. Soon, Gear S3 users will be able to pay nearly anywhere they’d like, without pulling out their phones. This is a new level of convenience for smartwatch users.
In addition to the fuller use of Samsung Pay, the Gear S3 presents a refined design, improved battery life, and more. Apple will also likely unveil a new Apple Watch on September 7th, but it’s unlikely that Apple will include MST.
